In 1918 certain women in the United Kingdom won the right to vote. Franchise for all British women has extended over the years, thanks to the courage of suffragettes and their heirs. These comprise both women, and men enlightened enough to champion their cause.
As we celebrate this centenary, we present this anthology. The rise and fall of every woman’s rights must comprise a vital part of human history.
We have learned that throughout history starting from the Mesopotamian era that her personal and political freedom might have depended on herself, the family and society in which she lives; governments, however, have the responsibility to protect women and girls as well as allowing them conditions in which fearlessly to live, study and work.
Women’s abuse is on the rise, whether in war-torn or comparatively peaceful countries and developed ones.
Some writers tell us of tragedy. Others strive to transmute despair to hope.
Many thanks to all contributors from different backgrounds and educational levels.
تحتفي المرأة في إنگلترا بمئويتها.. مئوية حقّها في التصويت بالانتخابات.
بين احتفاءٍ مئويّ قريب واحتفاءاتٍ امتدت لقرونٍ وقرون، وبين فرحٍ وترح، وقعت المرأة في الفخِّ بين قوانين رفعت من مكانتها وأخرى أخلّتْ بها. وهي، تارةً تزهو بنفسها وتارةً تستنكر ما هي فيه.
ها نحن نرى ازدياد العنف ضد المرأة سواء في الدول المتطورة أو تحت ظلّ الحروب: سيّان، مع فوارق بسيطة.
تُرى، هل تقع مسؤولية حماية المراة على عاتقها هي فقط أمّ أنّ المجتمع و الحكومات تتحمّل جزءاً من هذه المسؤوليّة؟
