A child’s face.. A horse’s face ~

Inam Jaber

Painting: Guernica’s Picasso

I saw them looking at a spot.

Two faces.

A child’s face

And a horse’s face,

Looking at a spot

In the holocaust debris.

From its breath

The fathers’ looks,

The mothers’ looks,

And the friends’ looks set themselves free.

The cat’s meow

And atoms of fear

Sprung from amongst feathers of a hen

The chicks of which

In the alleys of Al-Zenjeeli went missing.

In the child’s face

I saw a more horrific Guernica.

It was that of a horse hit by a coward tank bomb in Jameelah1 town.

Both the faces were caught in the clutches of Daesh beasts.

In “Al-Zenjeeli Guernica

The child didn’t dare feel the pond of blood

On his face,

Nor did he dare touch the eyes

Which were by then no longer eyes.

The blood was still running down his cheeks, his temples and his neck.

Should he touch his eyes?

One of them might fall off.

Heaps of darkness

Over heaps of darkness

And darkness filled the place.

The horse’s face was captured by all the gloominess there

And his eyes were shrouded by the murky Guernica.

The child did no tunderstand the Guernica

Nor did the horse.
