Chuquai Billy
I trampled through the woods many times
Enough to recognise a tree
A shrub
A growth
The balance of nature unspoiled by the hands
Of progressiveness.
I stood next to Mother Ocean listening to her rhythms in the night
Like a lullaby to a scared child
And praying to her watery goodness to dry my tears.
In the summer I climbed to the top of the hill
Offering my smoke, my sweat, my broken heart to grandmother
So to open the road before me
The good red road.
I pleaded for understanding from the spirit who has the ear
Of the changes in the universe
On this first day of growing things.
