Arabic poem by Hameed Qassim English Translation by Buthaina Al Nasiri Thirty years have passed And we’re on Mount Bemo still At the farthest corner To the left of the cave’s mouth * Our drenched bones, Wet with moisture Have turned brittle. I got soaked a lot, Oh God! * Our guns are still rusty in our hands. Our backs to the mount, reclining The way we sit in a lounge * And there is grass, which turns green twice a year Growing amid Phalanges of our fingers. And around our worn-out shoes * Everything around us Suggests it has been thirty years Maybe more Since the war was over But not for our worn-out bones. * Is it plausible that mothers Do not hear the wailing of their children’s bones? The abandoned, The damp, The wet bones, high on the mountains? ++
