The Law

The Law, Isabel Ros Lopez

Poem and Artwork Isabel Ros Lopez

The poem is in the voice of a lawmaker explaining to the listener the deceitful logic behind their process, shedding light on their intention to violate the very law they are writing to do the opposite.

“This is the law
you understand…

We drafted it and
got it down
onto the books
that constitute
our rules
Not constituted
into a constitution
because that would be foolish
to do
We do not want things set
in concrete
do we?
People might think there is a contract
or something
We had to drill holes into it
you understand…
in case of flooding
for the tide of deceit to get through
or else
we could drown
in a deluge
of truth.”

If I listen to you
I’d have to prosecute
thousands of violators

So,
who can prosecute
the prosecutors
