A passage from the book on the description of Tigg’s murder:
“As the sunlight died away, and evening fell upon the wood, he (Tigg) entered it. Moving here and there a bramble or a drooping bough which stretched across his path, he slowly disappeared. At intervals a narrow opening showed him passing on, or the sharp cracking of some tender branch denoted where he went: then he was seen or heard no more.
Never more beheld by mortal eye or heard by mortal ear: one man expected. That man, (Jonas) parting the leaves and branches on the other side, near where the path emerged again, came leaping out soon afterwards.
What had he left within the wood, that he sprang out of it, as if it were a hell.
The body of a murdered man. In one thick solitary spot, it lay among the last year’s leaves of oak and beech, just as it had fallen headlong down. Sopping and soaking in among the leaves that formed its pillow; oozing down into the boggy ground, as if to cover itself from human sight; forcing its way between and through the curling leaves, as if those senseless things rejected and foreswore it, and were coiled up in abhorrence; went a dark, dark stain that dyed and scented the whole summer night from earth to Heaven.”
صدر في ٢٠١٧ عن وزارة التعليم العالي والبحث العلمي في بغداد-العراق وعن جمعية المترجمين العراقيين كتاب “كيف تدّرس رواية لتشارلز ديكنز للمترجمة زينب وادي شهاب والتالي مقطع من ترجمة لوصف لمقتل تيك:
“عندما غاب ضوء الشمس، وأرخى الليل سدوله على الغابة، دخــــل (تيك) فيها. يتحرك العلّيق هنا وهناك، أو أنّ غصن ساقط يمتد عبر طريقه. على نحو بطيء اختفى. على الأرض المنخفضة قرب النهر فتحة ضيقة تنير الطريق له ليمر. التكسر الحادّ لبعض الأغصان الغضة تدلّ على مكان ذهابه: وبذلك سوف لا يُرى و لا يُسمع .
لا يمكن ان يُرى بعين بشرية أو يُسمع باذن بشرية : شخص واحد مُقوقع . ذلك الرجل (جونز) تاركاً الأوراق والأغصان على الجانب الآخر، قريباً حيث يبرز الطريق مرةً اخرى، بعد ذلك يأتي واثباً وعلى الفور.
يا تُرى ماذا ترك ضمن الغابة، لدرجة انه انطلق خارجها، وكأنما هي الجحيم!
جثة رجل مقتول. في بقعة منعزلة كثيفة، ترقد وسط أوراق البلوط والزان للسنة الماضية، وكأنما قد سقطت رأسياً الى الاسفل. منغمسةً ومتشربةً وسط أوراق الأشجار التي شكلت وسادة لها. وتنضح إلى الأسفل في أرض المستنقع، وكأنّما تغطي نفسها من أنظار الناس، تقحم نفسها بطريق بين الأوراق المتشابكة وخلالها. كأنما هذه الأشياء العديمة الإحساس ترفضها وتتخلى عنها، وتضطرب بمقت لها. وتذهب بقعة داكنة، داكنة تصبغ وتمنح ليلة الصيف كلها رائحة من الأرض الـى السماء”.
