Stars

photo and words by Isabel del Rio

SYNOPSIS

Beautiful things can be found just like that, by serendipity. There is no need to seek them, for they will come to you when you need them most. Even in the darkness of space and surrounded by the unexplained, a light will shine on you to let you know that it is all clear, all worth it, all bliss.

In the beginning, there was nothing.

And much later, with no one to witness
the goings-on, there was still nothing.

Stars never really got to exist until we came along, encouraged
as we were by words, for we were led to believe
that we stood as the arbiters of the truth.

In time, we became somewhat capable of seeing
and hearing what was dark and silent, giving it a name, assigning a purpose,
looking out for possible causes or acceptable explanations,
even discovering laws, at least the observable ones.

Rest assured that there is no more than this task of seeing, hearing,
and naming. Yet such a task is no imposition or chastisement but a gift, both wondrous,
and unexplained. And, like little kids, we like to play solely with the box,

and sometimes, by pure chance, we come across
what might just sustain us a little longer and bring us some joy:

a gentle word, a pleasing sound, the colour of the stars
