YEHYA AL GHAZAL IN THE NORTH SEAS ~

Arabic by: Amjed Mohamed Saeed
Translated by: Buthaina Al Nasiri

There is Cordoba, distancing like a lantern of silver and wax
The western coast drifting near,
In form of waves and fragments of the moon
Sails fluttering on the grey horizon
My blood, yearning, for its earlier course,
Roams the earth boastfully on a greyish mare
Yearning for mad storms on the forehead of the wind
And for clouds of wrath in cracked twilight
Adorned with images of fantasy.
Here, is Cordoba going inland
While you seek God's universe
Carried on the palm of nights.
Would your eyes ever rest?
Wrapped in home flames, friends and rimes?
When will you reach your safety shores?

Hunting shells and pearls thrown to the sand by the waves.
Oh, friend, when?
Away with delusion, said I.
Let the grayish mare gallop after the glimmer of the dream
Give me the glass full to the brim
For I may go faraway
I cannot tell.
My affairs might take me afar.
And to the unknown, my doom might lead me on,
With promises, then goes on,
Roaming the earth from mode to mode
When seeing the road drifting away, my friend wept
(Believing Caesar's fate would befall us both)
"Do not weep", said I, "Aspiring to a realm
We are, or shall be pardoned, only with death"1
On the sand, horses write, tales of a lost king.
Abu Kinda, haughtily walking along the routes of the sun.
It is either the realm, or let death come riding,
On a red saddle, with swords drawn.
Here I, like Umru'al Qais, grant a flame of the mystery,
Running like a jaguar
My mare as a wave, my horizons as hurricanes of the north.
The end of Earth beckoning me on,
I, Yehya al Ghazal, the gallant poet
Going my way, holding to my chest, my homeland's seal

Waving banners of love, waving for peace, men's vows
(Dwelling a portion of the day at a house
Fearing much for myself, is a heavy lot.
Man, fearing death, may try to escape
But, he shall be caught anywhere, by what he fears most.)3

Glided, on the face of water, his ebony boat,
Engraved with endurance, and a dream
Of songs heaved by the masts,
In the voices of men, chanting
With the yearning of oars for the sea
And Yehya recording down his account,
Under the lantern's light
Provoked, crossing a time made of pride,
And another, of waves.

How long has gone by? Waters, like earth, have no ends
What is beyond this remote ocean,
Which eyes cannot behold?
Are there creatures ... boats?
Who can reveal the mystery?
Destinies befall people, burdened with agonies
Caravans fear hidden surprises on the road
Nations have their children fighting among themselves,
Drowned with endless wrath.

Let, you, Ghazal, be
An olive branch
Or peace banner engraved
By the hands of prophets and messengers
Who tirelessly, came, in caravans following caravans.
Let, You, Ghazal, be
A poet, a prophet, drying the tears of
Centuries brimmed with blood
Be, a translator for what was on your ancestors' soil, writ,
And quote from the scrolls of Babylon, or Damascus and
Egypt, Mecca and Yemen.

Welcome Ghazal
Welcome Ghazal
That is Jutland (4), a pearl in an ocean of silvery moon
Horik (5) shoots an arrow of fire at the horizon
A gift for you, like a flower, like a book.
This is Daner (6), the faraway country, a rosary in your hands
This is Earth shedding its skin
Stripping naked on a snowy theater like a bride.
Evening smokes soar,
And the fire of hospitality is glimpsed
By ships from West and East.
Horik's companion, for twenty months, you have been,

Reciting your poetry, courting, narrating
Like Sindbad, legends of your folk
O, Arab descendant of Bakr tribe
Who breathed fragrances of Jaen and Cordoba
Do say to Horik:
O, King, lord of storms and snow
Hedeby (7) today is a miracle from the space of distancing.
And you, cousin of the deer
Brother of wise falcons
What between us, a silky dream is,
And icon made of Gazelles' horns.
Memory of blood on the masts.
But now we open a mirror window out of our minds
Establishing an era,
Of lilies spilled on the grass of time
Let you be, O Ghazal of love and rime
Eyes for your people beyond the seas
Their messenger.
Their eloquent tongue
(From Abdul Rahman the Second, lord of the two seas,
From the glorious Andalucia
To Horik the Great king of cherished Jutland
Greetings and peace.)
(From Horik King of Daner and Jutland to Abdul Rahman the
Second, King of revered Andalucia

Greetings....and peace.)

OK Cancel

OK Cancel

  1. Thank you very much for this opportunity to publish my translation of this lovely poem by the Iraqi poet Amjed Mohamed Saeed who went on his own boat of life to the other world some years ago.
