The Caskets of Tears (2024) a novel by Inam Jaber, published and distributed by Ebjed for Translation, Publishing and Distribution, Iraq.
As readers delve into the text, they immediately recognise that they are embarking on a narrative that bridges reality and imagination. Its reality is filled with tragic tales and real events experienced daily by Iraqis for decades, while its imagination vividly evokes the details in a fantastical manner. The author shows the readers a mesmerising, unique world. She narrates events with a surrealism that grants the readers a moment to catch their breath between one calamity and the next.
The series of events is tied together by the thread of imagination, placing the reader within a spiderweb-like trap that allows no escape. Instead there is further slipping into a fantastical world narrating painful real-life stories. These comprise tales of poverty and hunger and stories of assassinations and mass deaths. There are also accounts of to the rampant spread of corruption. The writer explores the vulnerabilities of the humans injured in their humanity and dignity. Even the souls of the sufferers are impacted by their experiences.
All is woven within a framework of imagination that is not merely abstract but provides a sensory approach to the subject. The authors show the effects of the disease that has engulfed the world, “coronavirus”, and the nature of the conditions experienced by the Iraqi people in their modern history, laden with grim events. The disease has spread and entrenched
itself in the land. It wears the mask of a domineering human, controlling the behaviour of the people and reigns over them with its harm, thus embittering their lives on various levels.
The writer begins to open the caskets of tears to narrate to us through her fantastical world the real events experienced by Iraq during a contemporary period. Each box represents a catastrophe that befell the country, wreaking havoc on the hearts and destinies of those who lived through it or
heard of it. Disasters range from the tragedies of loss of lives to the loss of loved ones, passing through the horrors of mass graves, abject poverty, and the captivity of freedom by fear.
Inam Jaber narrates with profound sorrow, leaving the reader to smoulder in the flames of grief in which her characters burn. They come from the land of sorrows where voices resonate laden with “sorrow and despair, steeped in a strangely flavoured sadness”.
The story chronicles an important historical period and delves into the details of people’s lives in a style imbued with elements of surprise and creativity in connecting the dots between imagination and reality. This compels readers to be drawn to read the collection of stories and to persist until the end, despite the pain that sometimes makes them wonder what makes them not put the book aside.

بين غرائبية السرد وسوداوية الواقع
ما أن يشرع القارئ بقراءة النص حتَّى يعرف أنَّه مقبل على نص يربط ما بين الواقع و الخيال. واقع أحداثه مليئة بقصص مأساوية و أحداث حقيقية عاشها العراقي يومياً لعقود و خيال يصف التفاصيل و يحكيها بطريقة خيالية لاتبعد القارئ عن هدف الكاتب لكنها ترسم له عالماً خاصاً مدهشاً يروي الأحداث بسريالية تعطيه فسحة لالتقاط أنفاسه ما بين طامة و أخرى!
مجموعة الأحداث تربطها حبكة خيال تجعل القارئ بين شباك عنكبوتية لاتسمح له إلَّا بالمزيد من الانزلاق في عالم خيالي يسرد قصصاً واقعية مؤلمة، فمن حكايا الفقر و الجوع إلى حكايا الاغتيال والموت الجماعي إلى تفشي الفساد تتبَّع الكاتبة مكامن ضعف الانسان المبتلى في إنسانيته و كرامته و حتى روحه القلقة من أثر ما يمر به. كل ذلك في إطار من خيال ليس بخيال بل هو مقاربة حسية بين المرض الذي شغل الدنيا بأسرها “كورونا” بشراسة تفشيه السريع ووحشية أعراضه المؤذية وجنون حصده الأرواح من كل الأعمار و بين ماحدث في العراق و طبيعة الأحوال التي مرَّ بها الانسان العراقي في تاريخه الحديث المثقل بالأحداث قاتمة الملامح وما زال. فالمرض الذي استشرى و استحكم في الارض يلبس قناع الإنسان ذي الجبروت الذي يتحكم بمقدَّرات العباد و يهيمن بأذاه على الإنسان فينكِّد عيشه على الأصعدة المختلفة كما فعل من فعل في الناس بالبلد.
تبدأ الكاتبة بفتح صناديق البكاء لتروي لنا من خلال عالمها الخيالي أحداثاً واقعية مر بها العراق خلال حقبة زمنية معاصرة. كل صندوق يمثِّل كارثة مرَّ بها البلد فعصفت بقلوب و مصائر من عاشها و من سمع بها ابتداءً من فواجع فقدان الأرواح إلى فقدان الأحبَّة مروراً بكوارث المقابر الجماعية والانفجارات و الفقر المدقع و الحرية أسيرة الخوف.
تسرد أنعام الجابر قصصها بحزن عميق لتترك القارئ يتلظَّى بنار الأسى الذي يغرق فيه شخوصها القادمين من أرض الأحزان حيث لا تنفك تُسمَع فيه أصوات محمَّلة ” بالأسى و اليأس و منقوع بحزن غريب النكهة”.
تؤرِّخ القصة حقبة تاريخية مهمة و تغوص في تفاصيل حيوات الناس بأسلوب لا يخلو من عنصر الدهشة و الإبداع في الربط ما بين الخيال و الواقع و هو ما يجعل القارئ ينجذب لقراءة مجموعة القصص و الاستمرار إلى النهاية بالرغم من الألم الذي قد يجعله أحياناً يتساءل: ما الذي يجعلني لا أترك الكتاب من يدي؟
