Be it a friend, be it a foe? ~  رمادُ الصَّداقة

Omayma Lateef

“Be it a friend, be it a foe?”
The query taunts and twists,
The heavens ahigh, the earths below,
Yet no truth, itself, admits.

He searches unto the chambers,
Of mind and heart, alike,
Yet nothing there awaits him,
To cure him of his blight.

When comes to pass, a path,
To which his heart must weep,
To which his bosom must languish,
To which his breast must heave.

Sweet times of joy and glee,
And pure innocence of yore,
With one so dear to he,
Yet one so dear, no more.

He falls unto a trance,
Wherein he lies, a fool,
Wherein the past bewitches,
Wherein blindness is cruel.

Yet quick is he awakened,
His heart abound with dread,
The winding path unfolds,
Betrays the road ahead.

Many a promise, broken,
Many a truth, denied,
‘Twas the very emblem,
Of kinship, in demise.

What shall I do with mine own self?
Which path ought I to tread?
The heavens warn me of one truth,
The earth denies their stead.

Alas, farewell to thee, my friend,
My foe, be it all the same.
May we never meet again,
But in heaven’s domain.
