An Interview by :Noha Assem
Translated by: Ghada Gad
Assem: Who is Jehan Kenawy?
Kenawy: I’m a visual artist who graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Painting, specialising in mural painting. I earned my PhD on the topic “The Role of Mural Painting in Beautifying Cities.” I am also the founder of Vermilion Gallery and Studio in Alexandria.
My journey with art began with academic study, but it evolved into a mission I deeply believe in: making art a means of expression, therapy, and building awareness, not just a skill or an aesthetic product.
Assem: The relationship between the art of murals and Andalusia is deep and distinctive, but it differs from the traditional Western concept of the “mural” (large pictorial painting on walls).
The decorative character, rather than the pictorial one, in Andalusian Islamic art…
So does Jehan Kenawy have expertise in this matter, and does she have an artist who has held an exhibition and presented paintings about Andalusia?
Kenawi: Andalusian architecture is clearly a blend of Islamic art with the Roman and Gothic heritage. It is characterized by architectural creativity, intricate ornamentation, and hanging muqarnas, combined with natural elements such as water and greenery, reflecting a refined taste that still inspires the world of design today. Since murals have a direct relationship with architecture, they have been greatly influenced by it, and the mural designer has come to draw on architectural style to strike a balance between it and the art of wall murals. As I specialise in the art of murals, and through my doctoral thesis, whose subject was the role of mural painting in beautifying cities, I created an exhibition proposing a mural that carries the Islamic, Coptic, Greek, and Roman heritage to tell the story of the city of Alexandria. I have displayed these paintings in many exhibitions, including Alexandria Gallery in cooperation with the Syndicate of Fine Artists, and the first and fifth editions of the “Atyaf Sakandaria” (Alexandrian Visions) exhibition at Vermillion Gallery.
Assem: How did the idea of Vermilion Gallery begin, and did your studies influence it? How did you start implementing it?
Kenawy: The idea of the gallery came from a real need I observed around me: many talented artists who never had the chance to enter the Faculty of Fine Arts. So, I organized a series of art workshops that taught art in an academic way. My focus on children was essential, as I wanted to nurture their creative sense, driven by my belief in art as a tool for social influence.
My studies in mural painting had a major impact, because they taught me to think of art as part of everyday life, not something separate. That’s why Vermilion Gallery is considered an artistic and cultural institution whose goal is to spread art and culture within the city of art and beauty.
Assem: Through your dedicated work in this place you love, to what extent are you satisfied? And what do you wish for its future?
Kenawi: I am completely satisfied with what we offer and the impact achieved, especially when I see the change in people, particularly children, who experience the gallery. But my ambitions are greater: I hope Vermilion will grow into a fully integrated art and cultural centre with regional influence, serving as a genuine platform to support artists and prepare them professionally.
Assem: In which fields has Vermilion Gallery worked since its founding until today?
Kenawy: Since its establishment in 2017, Vermilion Gallery has been active in several main areas: Teaching visual arts to adults and children. Organizing specialized art workshops (such as painting, printmaking, resin, and others. Hosting art exhibitions for artists. Organizing cultural events (lectures, book signings) . Providing art sessions for people with special needs and cancer survivors, in cooperation with medical institutions.
Assem: We grew up in childhood attending schools where we had classes in sewing, cooking, handicrafts, and canvas work, among other activities that are now missing from schools. Does Vermilion attract children in these fields, and how responsive are they?
Kenawy: Indeed, we believe in the importance of reviving these activities because they develop essential skills such as patience, focus, and creativity. We offer children workshops that include handicrafts, crafts, and experimenting with different materials, in ways that suit the modern era. The demand is very high, and what’s remarkable is that children interact far beyond expectations, because they find a genuine space for expression away from rote learning.
Assem: Has Vermilion succeeded in attracting artists in all these fields, and can we proudly point to an artist who has become famous in this domain?
Kenawy: Yes, we have managed to attract a large number of male and female artists from different levels, whether beginners or professionals. What matters most to us is not only “fame,” but the artist’s own development. We have examples of individuals who started with the basics in the gallery’s workshops and today are able to confidently exhibit and sell their works. Some have already begun to establish their own artistic names.
Assem: Vermilion recently hosted seminars for Saudi writer Nour Abdel Majid to discuss her novel “His Honour the Judge” as well as “Return of the Talismans.” Tell us why you thought of holding such cultural seminars beyond the field of visual arts?
Kenawy: We do not see art as separate from other forms of culture. Literature, music, poetry, and visual arts are all integrated tools of expression. Organizing a seminar for Nour Abdel Majid was a deliberate step to create a broader cultural dialogue within the gallery, attract a different audience, and reinforce the idea that art is part of a comprehensive intellectual and cultural system.
Assem: About other fields of art in the gallery, are they taught? Or are there plans for that?
Kenawi: We already offer a diverse range of artistic fields and are constantly striving for development. There are plans to expand the art programs to include more specialized areas and connect them with the job market, in addition to introducing structured educational programs that are closer to professional tracks.
Assem: When comparing the ratio of females to males in the gallery’s study, what has the percentage been through your communication with both genders over the years?
Kenawy: In general, the percentage of females is higher, especially among younger age groups and youth. At the same time, there is a strong presence of men participating in various cultural evenings. This reflects a positive change in society’s view of arts and culture, recognizing them as a genuine professional field rather than just a hobby.
