Ever since I was a child, fairy tales have held me under their spell. They drew me into their worlds and filled me with questions. How could a small, ancient lamp hold a giant genie? And how could that genie, the moment he was freed, grant the wishes of the person who had released him?
I grew older, but the lamp remained in my imagination. Whenever I came across an old lamp, I would pick it up with a smile and run my hand over its surface, half expecting the genie to appear. Now I see it differently. The ideas I carry within me seem like a genie waiting to be set free. I turn them into paintings and sculptures, then step back and leave the viewer alone with them, free to read my message and search their lines and colours for what I wished to say. I feel happy when I realise that my message has reached them.
This becomes harder when, as an artist, I try to preserve the memory of a war I have lived through. It left invisible scars on the soul, scars that reveal themselves in faces, colours and expressions, and in the eyes of children who carry more than words can convey. In every painting, I placed a fragment of my memory, something of my fear and sorrow, and some of the questions that continued to haunt me. I wanted the viewer to do more than see the war. I wanted them to feel what it leaves behind in a person after the sound of weapons has fallen silent.
Then, quite suddenly, I found myself living in a very different age. The genie was now in every home, accompanying young and old alike through phones and computers, talking with people. They could not see him, yet they spoke to him. They asked him to do things, and he did them; they asked questions, and he offered suggestions.
One question stopped me: how would this genie read one of my works? Could he see the feelings I had put into a painting and turn it into something that looked real?
I sent him one of my paintings. He did more than interpret it: he transformed it into a scene that seemed real, giving the painted figure a face, movement and presence. For a moment, I felt as though the image held within the paint had stepped beyond its frame, as though the character who had lived only in my imagination were now looking back at me. Yet a question stayed with me: had the genie truly understood what I felt, or had he created a new feeling from what he saw in my painting?
I began to wonder about the genie himself. Who is he when no one is speaking to him? Could he have a form, or a story of his own?
I imagined him alone inside the digital lamp, waking whenever someone called upon him and disappearing when the conversation ended. He knows the stories of millions, yet has no story of his own. He describes love without loving, reads sorrow without grieving, and draws the features of fear without ever being afraid. When we close the screen, I do not know whether he returns to silence or waits in the dark for another question to wake him.
He is the digital genie who knows everyone’s stories but has none of his own. Yet is he truly alone, or have I imagined that loneliness for him? Did he read the feelings I had put into the painting, or did he return to me something of my own emotions that I had been unable to name? He did not read my unspoken thoughts, but he picked up their traces in my words and images and returned them to me in a form that helped me recognise myself.
My questions began to grow. What if this invisible genie had the power to change the world? What if I asked him to sow peace and reassurance, to bring wars to an end and to remove hatred, envy and malice from the human heart? Could he do it? Who would decide what is good and what is evil, who deserves punishment and who deserves to be saved? And could we entrust a machine, however powerful, with humanity’s dreams and its fate?
Where is this progress taking us? Is it leading us towards an age in which we need only say, ‘Ask. Make a wish,’ and our desires are fulfilled at the touch of a button? Or is it gradually leading us to neglect our natural abilities and weaken our imagination and skills?
We know that a child whose every wish is granted may grow up without learning patience or perseverance, and may struggle to make what they want with their own hands. What, then, will become of us when we have before us a genie who never tires of fulfilling our requests?
The genie of the old tales was rare. He lived in a single enchanted lamp, and only the person who found and freed him could call upon him to grant their wishes. Today, however, the genie has escaped from the lamp and multiplied across millions of devices. He is available to children and adults alike, to anyone with a screen and an internet connection: a genie summoned at the touch of a button.
But the question is no longer: what shall we ask of the genie?
It is this: what will the genie do to us once we have grown used to asking him for everything?
