Cyril Porter was an engineer in the British army stationed in Iraq during the Great War, 1914-1918. He settled in Iraq and lived there until his death in 1966. During that time he wrote to his family, his letters are not so much about him as a person but give us a snapshot into a very important era in Middle Eastern history. They remind us how the actions of yesteryear still have huge consequences on what is happening now.

كان سرل پورتر مهندساً في الجيش البريطاني في العراق إبان الحرب العالمية الأولى (١٩١٤-١٩١٨). عاش في العراق حتى وفاته في عام ١٩٦٦. كتب خلال تلك الفترة رسائلَ عدة إلى أهله وأصحابه. لم تكن الرسائل شخصية إنّما تنقلنا تلكم الرسائل التي جمعتها ابنته إيميلي إلى حقبة تاريخية هامة من تاريخ الشرق الأوسط لتذكرنا من أنّ ما حصل بالأمس نلمس نتائجه اليوم.
