Some sweet and sour worries concerned me as our honeymoon was approaching its end. So, the real marital life would start soon with the soul mate who my heart chose, supported by my sensibility and blessed by my family. That was natural, I thought. Hence became hard on myself blaming it to be so anxious in that childish way.
I was optimistic about the constancy of our love and that our marriage would last for long time, God Willing, until death would do us part. My strong belief in durability and solidity was inspired by the various solid, historical evidence around me, some of which whispered, some cried, while some shed bitter tears silently.
Our grandfathers established a great civilisation that flourished here for several centuries, in such atmospheres that were filled with tolerance, justice, and co-existence. That was truly a rare and unique anthropological model. Besides, it was here where the legendary love stories took place of Wallada bint Al-Mustakfi and Ibn Zaydun, and Itimad Al-Rumaikiyya and Al-Mu’tamid ibn Abbad, the lover who chose to be so close to his beloved, physically, spiritually and even onomastically.
Happiness wrapped me while I was packing all the souvenirs my bridegroom bought me from every Andalusian city we had been to. In fact, he never spared any effort to please me, starting with his affectionate consent that our honeymoon destination was Al Andalus, in Southern Spain, despite the summer heat. However, it was proportional to our feelings. We chose the period from mid-June to mid-July for full enjoyment of seasonal summer activities.
As Cordoba was our first destination, I wrapped carefully, yet tenderly, the model of the Great Mosque, with its famous Minaret which the muezzins reached, like noble knights, on the backs of the best Arabian stallions. When it was the turn of souvenirs from Granada, the last fortress of honour and dignity, my tears started pouring on the paper wraps which cautiously cuddled the model of Alhambra Palace with all its matchless splendour, and delicate miniature engravings as a mythical monument.
I did not forget of course, the posters of the Fountain of Lions and Madinat Al Zahra, and the pomegranate and orange figurines. I wished I could fill their hollows with the fragrance of their blossoms so that I could relive the joyful memories associated with them whenever I saw them and their scent wafted through the air.
God be praised, how hearts could feel differently in a flash. I forgot all about nostalgia. I was overwhelmed by ecstasy mixed with a delicious feeling of naughtiness as if I was on a bold adventure when I tried the red Flamenco dress, glowing with its Polka little full moons and attractive many-layered ruffles.
Next, I spread delicately the shawl with its exquisite embroidery on my shoulders. The image was almost perfect. As I unfolded the fine laced pericon, like a peakon flirting with its female, the landmarks of the fascinating Andalusian cities, Cordoba, Seville and Granada appeared, as well, tempting me to extend our stay and lengthening the period of the blissful honeymoon.
Had my dear husband not been asleep, I would have let my fingers play wildly the wooden castanets I bought from Albaicin one wonderful sunset. What a cheerful heart of a young woman, filled with love and happiness, clear from any gloomy clouds I had.
My reflection in the mirror warmed my heart greatly, still I thought of making it even more perfect. The Polka dots inspired me to wear my favourite pearly necklace. It was a precious, cherished gift from my late grandfather, which he brought to me from his last business trip to Japan. I rarely had it off.
Unfortunately, I could not find the necklace although I looked for it in all corners, probable and improbable places! The fruitless search made me fatigued. The fitting session of the Flamenco dress ended with the model’s repressed weeping. The inner wailing was tenser and more spontaneous like the melodious Mawwals of the Andalusian Muwashshahat.
I never imagined this unhappy ending to our awesome trip, nor that our last night in Seville had such a gloomy closing. Nevertheless, I went to bed with a glimpse of hope of finding the lost necklace, God Willing, despite the famous line of one of the Andalusian poets:
How despair was closer than hope,
And how closer tears were than patience.
A while later, although I did not know how long it was, several hands woke me up. I found myself staring at some well to do, elegant ladies, inviting me to escort them. I did not have any choice. Totally chanted, I walked away with them till we rode on legendary, winged horses. In no time we reached another group of lovely ladies who were surrounding their charming Mistress. The latter had once a whim to frolic and play in the mud, as if, no matter how high a person’s status might be or how much they had attained in terms of loving hearts, wealth, and power, their heart still yearned for those blissful moments whose radiance shone from the eyes of the simple folk, like those peasants whom the princess saw playing with mud and having a wonderful time. She wished she could play with her friends just like them, with complete freedom and joy.
But the two kinds of clay were incomparable! This one was mixed with musk, camphor, and the finest perfumes—which had transformed the way the ladies played with it as well. Here, it was more like a mask of fragrant henna, smoothed over soft faces, radiant necks, and delicate arms. Suddenly, the clamor of play ceased with a gasp of wonder and joy when the princess’s fingers struck a strange object in the mud mixture. As the whiteness of the object shone against the darkness of the clay, it turned out to be several strung pearls. She grasped the hidden gift with great enthusiasm and delight, pulling and pulling amid the astonishment and admiration of those present—and certainly the jealousy of some—until she had assembled a beautiful necklace of unprecedented length, which her maids wound around her marble neck in several layers amid shouts of joy and delight.
