Kamal Abu-Deeb
Huda’ for the towers of Gazzah
For Taleen & Richard
Yes,
you dinosaurs.
You can destroy the towers of the city.
But you will not destroy
The towers of the soul.
You can devour the supple forests.
But you cannot devour the sacrosanct soil
That hugs/engulfs the roots
That strike/,delve deep into the womb of nature.
you can gobble the sea
But you cannot dry the sky****
Of the pregnant clouds,
That will fill the lap of the sea
Once more
With the rains of life.
Yes,
you can wipe out each stone upon a stone
In the wilderness of Gazzah.
But you cannot gobble the sands
Which are made by the stones
and the sun and the sea and the wind
and the rain
From the shores of Gazzah
to the shores
of the Atlantic
yes yes
You Crocodiles of the Torah,
You can destroy the towers of the city,
but they will remain elect, rising high
Streaming with life,
And the cascading laughter of children,
and the clapping of the waves
and the chants of the fishermen
in the sands of the soul.
